4th Annual Archdiocesan Justice Convocation – Celebrating the Social Justice Dimensions of Vatican II

Join parishes from around the Archdiocese of Boston to learn more about Catholic Social Teaching and to celebrate the work for justice already going on, and find out concrete ways to connect faith with action in the service of justice. The theme this year is “Celebrating the Social Justice Dimensions of Vatican II” in light of the Pope’s planned launch of the Year of Faith on October 11, 2012 and the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council. The Convocation will be one half day, from 8:30am to 1:30pm with Celebration of Mass (Celebrant Cardinal Sean O’Malley), Keynote Address (Rev. J. Bryan Hehir), Keynote Panel: Injustice of Physician-Assisted Suicide with Peter Cataldo, Chief Healthcare Ethicist, Archdiocese of Boston, MC Sullivan, Director of Ethics, Covenant Health Systems and Dr. Asif Merchant, Chief, Palliative Medicine, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Exhibitors representing a wide range of social justice activities and 5 Breakout Workshops (two sessions, that will be repeated) led by expert panelists and parish representatives covering the following topics:

  • Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap. to celebrate Mass
  • Keynote Speech: Father J. Bryan Hehir, Cabinet Secretary for Health & Social Services
  • Keynote Panel: Injustice of Physician-Assisted Suicide with Peter Cataldo,
    Chief Healthcare Ethicist, Archdiocese of Boston, MC Sullivan, Director of Ethics,
    Covenant Health Systems and Dr. Asif Merchant, Chief, Palliative Medicine,
    St. Elizabeth Medical Center

Plus Workshops on:

  • Refugees and Parishes: Partners in Mission/Mutuality/Solidarity
  • Global Poverty:  Ways to Address Hunger Locally and Overseas
  • Youth Ministry: From Charitable Works to Social Justice

  • Catholic Environmental Justice: from St. Francis to Pope Benedict:
    Protecting the Community of Life

The Keynote Speech, Keynote Panel, Mass and Breakout Sessions will be taped for future viewing. There will be a coffee break during the morning with light snacks.  Participants are invited to bring their own lunch if they wish to continue networking after the Conference concludes at 1:30pm.
