Marriage Preparation FAQ's

Marriage Preparation FAQ's

PLEASE NOTE: The BEST person to ask your question(s) is the priest or deacon officiating your ceremony. Please start there. He may advise you differently than what is provided here and his recommendations are what you ought to follow.

I am engaged, what do I need to do?
Congratulations on your engagement! This is a very exciting time in your life as you prepare for your wedding AND marriage. Here is what you need to do in three simple steps:

1. First, meet with the priest or deacon who will oversee your preparation and be the official Church witness at your wedding. Simply start by calling your local parish or the parish in which you would like to get married and ask to schedule an appointment to meet with the priest or deacon. The priest or deacon will then explain the entire marriage preparation process and let you know what you need to do including paperwork, marriage preparation programs and ceremony preparations. Just to let you know, no weddings are scheduled over the phone.

2. Second, attend a Marriage Preparation Workshop. It is important to attend a program AFTER you have met with the priest or deacon as he may have a specific program he would like you to attend (perhaps at the parish itself or one he is familiar with). A schedule of Marriage Preparation Workshops is available here.
NOTES
• Programs meet a minimum of two times. One-day programs do not meet the Archdiocesan Guidelines. For each listing on our website, you will find the location first and then the meeting times for that location. In order to attend the program and receive a certificate of completion you must be able to attend all of the dates and times listed below the location. Workshops have a registration fee. Please contact programs directly (through the means they have posted online) for site specific information or to register.
• Natural Family Planning: We also highly recommend you to attend a Natural Family Planning Course. For more information, please visit: www.BostonCatholic.org/NFP. The information in this class is invaluable and will help strengthen your marriage.
3. Third, meet again with the priest or deacon who is overseeing your preparation. You will discuss with him your preparation experiences and work with him regarding other areas of your preparation including ceremony planning.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO FOR MARRIAGE PREPARATION?
The priest or deacon officiating your ceremony is ultimately responsible for your marriage preparation. You will want to check in with him regarding what you are doing to make sure it meets his expectations.

I NEED TO ATTEND A MARRIAGE PREPARATION (ALSO KNOW AS PRE-CANA) PROGRAM. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
AFTER you have met with the priest or deacon officiating your ceremony and he has advised you to register for a program, a listing can be found at www.BostonCatholic.org/MarriageMinistries (follow the links on the left-hand side to the schedule).

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM CALLED TRANSFORMED IN LOVE AND WHY IS IT LISTED FIRST ON THIS WEBSITE?
Transformed in Love is the Archdiocesan program developed at the initiative of Cardinal Seán. Numerous professionals and married couples met and worked together to develop this program. For more information, including what former participants have said about this dynamic program, please click here.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND TRANSFORMED IN LOVE OR CAN I ATTEND THE OTHER PROGRAMS POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE?
Please check with the priest or deacon officiating your ceremony. Transformed in Love may be the program he desires you to attend. If, however, he has said you may attend any of the programs listed on this site, you may choose to attend the archdiocesan program or any of the other posted programs.

ARE ALL OF THE PROGRAMS THE SAME?
All of the programs posted as Transformed in Love are the same in content and length. The other programs run autonomously and their meeting times and content vary. Overall they cover similar topics; however, how much time is spent on each topic and what is exactly covered varies. Please speak with the priest or deacon preparing you for marriage regarding which program he may recommend.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH PROGRAM TO ATTEND?
Please check with the priest or deacon preparing you for marriage BEFORE registering to attend one of these programs. He may have a specific program he would like you to attend or he may say you can attend any of the programs posted here.

HOW MANY MEETINGS DO I HAVE TO GO TO?
Programs meet a minimum of two times. One-day programs do not meet the Archdiocesan Guidelines.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ATTEND A MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM?

HOW DO I FIND A PRIEST TO OFFICIATE OUR CEREMONY IF I AM GETTING MARRIED IN A LOCATION OTHER THAN WHERE CURRENTLY RESIDE?
It may be possible to find a priest to officiate a wedding at another parish. Begin by connecting with your local parish, a parish where you would like to get married, or your home parish (where you grew up). If you are still having difficulty after trying those avenues, the best office to connect with would be our Office of Clergy Personnel. The number there is (617) 779-3685.
