Memorandum for RCIA

Second Memorandum for RCIA (Revised)
To: RCIA Directors
From: Thomas Lyman, Coordinator, Office of Divine Worship
Date: January 24, 2019

Re: The Rite of Election, First Sunday of Lent 2019

The Office of Divine Worship is pleased to announce that registration for the 2019 Rite of Election/Call to Continuing Conversion is now open!

Our registration process has changed from prior years.  Now all that is required of RCIA coordinators is to fill out this Excel spreadsheet, save it, and email it as an attachment to Diane Campbell at diane_campbell@rcab.org. Detailed instructions are contained within the Excel spreadsheet itself.  To access the Excel spreadsheet, click on the attachment below. If there is any problem, do not hesitate to call either Diane at 617-746-5761 or Tom Lyman at 617-746-5880. Registration will close at the end of the day on Friday, February 22, 2019.

As a reminder of this year’s date and times already announced, while the Cathedral of the Holy Cross is closed for renovation, the Rite of Election will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at: Immaculate Conception Parish, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden, MA 02148 (with the Central and Merrimack Regions at 1:30 pm and the West, North, and South regions at 4:00 pm).

The Rite of Election is a rite which is proper to the Archbishop and is not intended for celebration in parish churches. Every catechumen and candidate in the Archdiocese of Boston is to participate in the Rite of Election with the Archbishop on the First Sunday of Lent. It is strictly forbidden by the Rite itself to hold a “rite of election” in the parish. The proper celebration for parishes is the “Rite of Sending Catechumens for Election and Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop,” an optional rite found in the RCIA. It has been the custom in the Archdiocese of Boston to include Uncatechized Adult Catholics as well as Candidates for Full Communion in this celebration since they may participate in some elements of the RCIA. The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion is not suited to the journey of other adult candidates for confirmation.

IMPORTANT:

  • If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to gather proper information for each Catechumen/Candidate using the RCIA Parish Intake Form.  To access this form, Click Here. We have created this form for parish use to collect the information.
  • Register your Catechumens and Candidates now for the Rite of Election/Call to Continuing Conversion, using the new registration process, before Friday February 22.
  • Check that marriage issues are resolved before you present people at the Rite of Election. This may include checking the marital history of the spouses of candidates and catechumens. Failure to deal with these cases has resulted in hurt and disappointment in the past.
  • Obtain and have on file in the parish a copy of the baptismal certificate from the church of the candidate’s baptism
