Youth Ministry/Middle & High School Faith Formation Director (FT), Collaborative Team of Pastoral Associates Holy Name Parish

Holy Name is an active Catholic parish (2200 registered families) within the City of Boston. There are four weekend Masses, and the Mass attendance is approximately 1100. The parish clergy include the pastor, one parochial vicar and one permanent deacon. There are two full-time lay ecclesial ministers (this position and another) and one 1/4-time lay ecclesial minister with long experience as pastoral associate / religious education director. The parish is part of Phase 6 of the archdiocesan Disciples in Mission process, from June 2018 onward.

The Director of Youth Ministry/Faith Formation is focused on the vibrancy on parish as a whole with specific attention to the needs of the middle and high school youth.  Connecting the faith formation of the teens in the parish with activities of the parish will lead to a foundation in faith for a lifetime!

There are 175 students in grades 7-10 (7, 8, Confirmation I, Confirmation II), with need for approximately 12-16 adult volunteer teachers and leaders. The program  currently meets in small classes for grades 7-Confirmation I and a large-group setting for Confirmation II. Classes meet on Sunday in the early evening.

The Youth Service Project offers high-school students the chance to engage in several local service opportunities, in an annual weeklong service trip out-of-state, and offers regular social activities.

As part of the parish pastoral team, the selected candidate will work collaboratively with the rest of the team to serve all the parishioners of Holy Name.  As a small team, collaboration and cross coverage of duties are critical to the spiritual health of the parish.  In this role, the Director of Youth Ministry/Faith Formation will drive the activities in the following areas:

Leadership of faith formation in Grades 7-10 (including preparation for Confirmation), which includes:

  • Recruitment and leading of catechists and a core support team for youth faith formation, which includes identifying catechists and providing support and training for the successful delivery of programming to the parish youth.   The Director will regularly participate in the teaching of faith formation classes.
  • Recruitment of occasional guest speakers to support the faith formation curriculum and engage the youth of the parish.
  • Serving as pastoral advisor/counselor for the youth (and their parents) of the parish for their faith formation.
  • Identify and deliver curated and age appropriate religious and spiritual media resources to the youth and their families to reinforce the classroom teachings.
  • Ensure smooth registration and attendance record keeping for program, utilizing parish resources when appropriate.
  • Plan and coordinate semi-annual intergenerational family faith events to connect the youth of the parish with the parish community.
  • Serve as the parish lead on all facets of Confirmation Preparation, specifically:
    • Planning and leading Confirmation Retreat
    • Orienting parents on their role in the Confirmation preparation, including conducting parent meetings
    • Lead the Confirmation candidates, their sponsors and the parish in the rehearsal and celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation

Coordination of the Youth Service Project (with adult advisors), which includes:

  • Preparation for and participation in an annual weeklong service trip to a needy area
  • Overseeing / advising youth leaders of the Youth Service Project’s youth council
  • Carrying out various service events during the school year
  • Planning and overseeing teen social events, approximately monthly
  • Providing a reflection component and prayer opportunities for participants

Service to the Whole Parish

  • Serve as lead for all Social Media Outreach activities for the Parish
  • Co-lead the coordination of Annual Parish Outdoor Mass and Picnic for the Entire Parish
  • Coordinate semi-annual Christian Service Outreach Activities for the Parish
  • Arrange and co-lead mandatory Virtus (child-protection) Training for all parish volunteers working with minors
  • Be pastorally present to parishioners and liturgical ministers, for 2 Masses per weekend
  • Contribute written pieces to the Bulletin, on a periodic basis
  • Serve as an active member of the Parish Youth Faith Formation Commission

Participate in Duties Common to All Pastoral Staff Members       

  • Ex officio membership on the Parish Pastoral Council
  • Regular and active participation in meetings of the parish staff
  • Representing the parish at assigned civic and archdiocesan meetings of various kinds
  • Presence at all parish-wide events
  • Active involvement in the archdiocesan Disciples in Mission process, Phase 6
  • Assisting in parish ministry in various needs that inevitably arise
  • Other related duties as assigned


  • An active member of the Catholic community, in good standing
  • Master’s degree preferred (or related experience) in Theology, Religious Education, Pastoral Studies, and/or a closely related field
  • 2-4 years of experience in religious education and/or youth ministry, optimally including teaching, retreat organization/leadership, and liturgy planning
  • A strong understanding of various faith-formation models, including intergenerational learning
  • Demonstrated success in designing and delivering religious faith formation education and programming
  • A personal commitment to ongoing professional development and spiritual formation
  • Maintains a strong personal witness supported by a vibrant individual and communal prayer life, regular sacramental participation, and a commitment to ongoing spiritual development for self and others
  • Certified in (or will obtain certification) in team leader training protection of children and knowledge of related ministerial conduct guidelines; will have personal certification in this area
  • Exercises sound judgment as a role model for youth in formative years; has a strong sense of boundaries in relationships with all members of the parish community
  • Strong Social Media and IT knowledge and is prepared to learn new software
  • Possesses a collaborative attitude to contribute to the success of the parish staff in support of the Holy Name community
  • Flexible schedule (including evening and weekends) in order to support the needs of the parish.  Must be available to travel as a chaperone on all youth service trips (minimum of one week per year).
