Parish Organist (PT), Saint Cecilia Parish, Boston

Saint Cecilia Parish in Boston, Massachusetts is seeking a part-time Organist for our parish of approximately 3,500 families. We are a welcoming, passionate, and inclusive Roman Catholic church with a vibrant music program that incorporates a broad range of liturgical musical styles.

The Parish Organist is a part-time position, assuming three distinct roles – providing organ music for three weekend liturgies (Saturday Vigil Mass at 5pm, Sunday Masses (9:30 and 11:15am), providing music for weddings and funerals, and overseeing the maintenance of the 4-manual Smith & Gilbert • Nobscot 1999 organ. Weekend Liturgies

At Saint Cecilia, we’re passionate about music. Dedicated to the patroness of sacred music and neighbor to three world-renowned colleges dedicated to music, we are committed to the choral support of the Church at prayer.

In Catholic worship, music is an integral part of the liturgical experience. The diversity of our large faith community demands that our music be accessible to all members of our community and that the music performed be of the highest quality.  Our weekend liturgies include traditional hymnody and contemporary works along with organ and choral solos.

In addition to supporting congregational singing, weekly preludes and postludes that reflect the theme of the readings and liturgical season are required.

Weekly Masses include the (Saturday Vigil Mass at 5pm, Sunday Masses (9:30 and 11:15am) and participation at Thursday evening choir rehearsal is expected.  Additional stipends for special services such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and other celebrations or concerts will be paid.

Weddings and Funerals

Saint Cecilia hosts over 50 weddings and 15 funerals each year. The parish organist will be responsible for providing music at these liturgies as required.

Maintenance of the Smith & Gilbert Organ

The parish organist will be responsible for working with our organ builder to keep current the maintenance of this historic instrument. The organist will also be responsible for making suggestions for either additions or amendments to the instrument.

  • 2 manual, 8 rank Antiphonal pipe organ
  • 6’10” Schimmel grand piano

Qualifications / Skills

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in music OR - Music conservatory degree OR - Equivalent pedagogical training.
  • Proficiency in playing the organ and piano.
  • Proficiency in sight reading
  • Proficiency in improvisation and modulation in hymnody.
  • Proficiency in accompanying choir and/or congregation on organ or piano.

Terms & Compensation

  • The position is 8-10 hours per week (not including weddings, funerals and special events)
  • Salary based on experience and education
  • Two weeks per year of paid vacation.
